What Happens at an Aesthetics Training Open Day? A Guide for Medics

5 min read

If you're a nurse, doctor, paramedic, pharmacist or other medic thinking about private aesthetics, the hardest part is often knowing where to start. Which course do you need? What is the training actually like? Can you really build a clinic alongside your NHS role?

A free Open Day is the easiest way to get honest answers before you spend anything. This guide explains exactly what happens at an Access 2 Aesthetics (A2A) Open Day, who it's for and how to make the most of it.

What is an aesthetics career Open Day?

An Open Day is a free event where medical professionals can see aesthetics training up close and talk to the people who deliver it. At A2A, an Aesthetics Training Academy that trains medical professionals only, it's a relaxed morning: no sales pitch, no obligation, just a clear picture of what a career in aesthetics involves.

It's designed for medics at the very beginning of their journey, as well as those who've been researching for a while and want to see an academy before they commit.

What happens on the day

Live treatment demonstrations

You'll watch live treatment demonstrations, so you can see exactly how it's done: the consultation, the assessment and the technique, in real time. For many medics this is the moment the career stops feeling abstract.

A look at how our training works

We'll show you how a training day runs, including our simulator faces, which every delegate practises on before treating real people, and how live model practice works under trainer supervision. Our courses have a maximum of six students, so you get close attention throughout.

Clinical answers from Helen Coombs

Helen Coombs, our Clinical Director, has 15 years in the aesthetics industry. She'll answer your clinical questions honestly, from which treatments suit a new practitioner to how we support delegates if something unexpected happens in clinic.

The business side from Andrew Coombs

Training is only half the picture. Andrew Coombs, our CEO, covers the business side: how to set up, how to find clients and how to run your clinic profitably. Aesthetic nurses usually work from a home clinic, a salon or a private clinic, and Andrew will talk you through what each option involves.

An open Q&A

There's time to ask anything you like. No question is too basic, and it's often the practical ones, such as insurance, timings or fitting training around shifts, that help people decide.

A prize draw for a free course

Every attendee is automatically entered into our prize draw to win a free Foundation Toxin training course worth £650, drawn live on the day.

Who should come to an Open Day?

Our Open Days are for registered medical professionals only. That includes doctors (GMC), nurses and midwives (NMC), paramedics and operating department practitioners (HCPC) and pharmacists (GPhC) with a valid PIN. You don't need any aesthetics experience, and medics come to train with us from all over the UK.

You also don't need to be a prescriber. Not being a prescriber isn't a blocker to getting into aesthetics: dermal filler and skin treatments don't need a prescription, and prescribers in our support group can help with your toxin clients. The nurses we train typically build up their clinic first, then aim to complete the V300 Prescribing Course within two to three years.

Questions worth asking on the day

To get the most from the morning, it helps to arrive with a few questions in mind. Here are some our guests often find useful:

  • Which course should I start with, and should I book toxin and dermal filler together or separately?

  • How much hands-on practice will I get, and on how many live models?

  • What support is there after the course if I have a clinical question or a complication?

  • How do I set up my first clinic, and what do I need in place before I treat clients?

  • What are the next steps after Foundation training?

What happens after the Open Day?

There's no pressure to book anything. Many guests go home, think it over and get back in touch when the timing is right. If you'd like to start, most people begin with Foundation training: Foundation Toxin, Foundation Dermal Filler or the Combined Foundation Toxin and Dermal Filler course. Our guide to what the Combined Foundation course covers explains the training day in detail.

Most of our courses run from 10am to 5pm, moving to 9am to 6pm for larger class sessions. Every delegate gets ongoing clinical aftercare and free business support, including our Business Start-Up Guidance eBook, and you can build your experience afterwards with a Shadow Day, a Mentorship Day or our advanced courses.

You can see all our courses and prices on our Cardiff price list.
