What Does a Combined Foundation Toxin and Dermal Filler Course Cover?

5 min read

If you're a medic thinking about private aesthetics, the Combined Foundation Toxin and Dermal Filler course is usually where the journey starts. It's also the course we're asked about most at our Open Days: what's actually included, how the day runs, and whether it's better to do both treatments together or one at a time.

This guide explains exactly what the course covers at Access 2 Aesthetics (A2A), Wales' Leading Aesthetics Academy, so you can decide whether it's the right first step for you.

What is a Combined Foundation Toxin and Dermal Filler course?

It's two Foundation courses in one: Foundation Toxin and Foundation Dermal Filler. You learn the theory and practical skills to treat the most requested areas with anti-wrinkle (toxin) injections and dermal fillers, and you finish with a certificate in both.

At A2A it runs as one extended day. Toxin comes first in the morning and dermal filler follows in the afternoon. We extend the day rather than cut corners, so every part of the training is completed to the same standard as the single courses.

Which treatment areas are covered?

  • Toxin (anti-wrinkle): the three most requested areas, frown, forehead and crow's feet.

  • Dermal filler: the peri-oral area, including lips, nasolabial folds and marionette lines, using both needle and cannula techniques.

These are the treatments clients ask for most, which is why they make a sensible starting point for a new practitioner.

What you'll learn: the theory

Safe injecting starts long before the needle. Before your training day you complete pre-course theory on our eLearning platform, which also includes video treatment demonstrations and complications training. The course covers:

  • the history of injectables and how toxin treatments work

  • facial anatomy, including key muscles and vascular pathways

  • contraindications and choosing suitable clients

  • the consultation process, face assessment and managing expectations

  • dilution and product preparation

  • treatment planning and marking up

  • pain management

  • adverse effects and complications management

  • aftercare and follow-up

  • health and safety, and emergency kit advice

Because the material stays on the platform, you can go back to it whenever you need a refresher once you're treating your own clients.

How the training day works

Live demonstration

Each session starts by recapping the theory with your trainer, then watching a live treatment on a model so you can see the consultation, marking up and technique in real time.

Practice on simulator faces

Next you practise on simulator faces, which are included in your training, so you can build confidence with your technique before you treat a real person.

Treating live models under supervision

You then treat live models with your trainer beside you. On the Combined course you treat the toxin and dermal filler areas the course covers, so you leave having done the treatments, not just watched them. The day ends with a Q&A and your certificate presentation.

How long is the day?

Timings depend on how many students are booked on the class, so we confirm your start and finish times when you book rather than promising a fixed day. Most courses run between 10am and 5pm, but may move to 9am to 6pm for larger class sessions.

Combined course or one module at a time?

You don't have to do both at once. Because the day is split, you can book just one module and attend only that part: Foundation Toxin students leave after the morning session, and Foundation Dermal Filler students join for the afternoon.

The combined option suits you if you want to offer both treatments from the start and keep your training to one day. Booking one module suits you if you'd rather build confidence in one treatment first. Either way, the content of each module is the same.

Class session or private 1:1?

A class session is £1,200 and lets you learn alongside other medics. A private 1:1 is £1,600 and gives you your trainer's full attention. A non-refundable £200 deposit secures your place, and PayPal Pay in 3 is available. You'll find every course on our Cardiff price list.

Do you need to be a prescriber?

No, and it shouldn't hold you back. Dermal filler doesn't need a prescription. Toxin is a prescription-only medicine, but if you aren't a prescriber, prescribers in our support group can help with your toxin clients. Being a prescriber simply helps a clinic run more smoothly.

The nurses we train typically start without prescribing, build up their clinic, then aim to complete the V300 Prescribing Course within two to three years, funding it from their clinic.

Who can train?

The course is for registered medical professionals only: doctors (GMC), nurses and midwives (NMC), dentists, dental hygienists and dental therapists (GDC), paramedics, operating department practitioners, physiotherapists and other allied health professionals (HCPC), and pharmacists (GPhC). You can train once you hold your professional PIN. We don't train dental nurses or non-medics. Medics travel to train with us from all over the UK.

If you're a nurse weighing up the move, our guide on how to become an aesthetic nurse in the UK walks through the wider steps.

What happens after the course?

You're never on your own. Every delegate gets clinical and business support from our directors, access to our support community and WhatsApp group, and support from our Clinical Director if something unexpected happens in clinic. Your eLearning also includes consent and aftercare forms, pharmacy and insurance details, and our free Business Start-Up Guidance eBook.

When you're ready for more, a Shadow Day or Mentorship Day adds clinical experience, and our Advanced Toxin and Advanced Dermal Filler courses build on your Foundation training.

Not sure yet? Come and see it for yourself. Our next free Aesthetics Career Open Day is on Sunday 24 January 2027, 10am to 1pm, at our new home: 20 Centre Court, Treforest Industrial Estate, Pontypridd CF37 5YR. You'll watch live treatment demonstrations and can ask Clinical Director Helen Coombs and CEO Andrew Coombs anything about training and starting your clinic. Every attendee is entered into a prize draw to win a free Foundation Toxin course worth £650. It's for medical professionals only.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Combined Foundation Toxin and Dermal Filler course cover?

It covers Foundation toxin (anti-wrinkle) treatment of the frown, forehead and crow's feet, and Foundation dermal filler treatment of the peri-oral area, including lips, nasolabial folds and marionette lines, using both needle and cannula. Alongside the practical work you learn facial anatomy, contraindications, consultation, treatment planning, complications management and aftercare.

How long is the Combined Foundation course?

It runs as one extended day, with toxin in the morning and dermal filler in the afternoon, after pre-course theory on our eLearning platform. The finish time depends on how many students are booked on the class, so we confirm timings with you when you book. Most courses run between 10am and 5pm, but may move to 9am to 6pm for larger class sessions.

Can I book just the toxin or just the dermal filler module?

Yes. You can book Foundation Toxin or Foundation Dermal Filler on its own and attend only that part of the day: the toxin session in the morning or the dermal filler session in the afternoon.

Do I need to be a prescriber to do this course?

No. Not being a prescriber doesn't stop you training or practising. Dermal filler doesn't need a prescription, and for toxin, prescribers in our support group can help with your toxin clients. Many nurses later take the V300 Prescribing Course once their clinic is established.

Who can attend?

Registered medical professionals: doctors (GMC), nurses and midwives (NMC), dentists, dental hygienists and dental therapists (GDC), paramedics, ODPs, physiotherapists and other allied health professionals (HCPC), and pharmacists (GPhC). You can train once you hold your professional PIN. We don't train dental nurses or non-medics.

How much does the Combined Foundation course cost?

A class session is £1,200 and a private 1:1 is £1,600. A non-refundable £200 deposit secures your place, and PayPal Pay in 3 is available. See our Cardiff price list for every course.
